Little Willie John - Heart Attack

Then, having completed just two years of his sentence, Willie John died mysteriously. Keen to put the case behind them, authorities returned a verdict of heart attack, though there have been unsubstantiated tales over the years of mistreatment by both staff and inmates, possibly resulting in asphyxiation.

Sonny Boy Williamson II - Tuberculosis

Struggling not to cough up blood during his performances, he played an impromptu jam, now the stuff of folklore, with the group Levon & The Hawks (who went on to become Bob Dylan’s back up unit The Band) just a fortnight before he passed away. Williamson’s failure to show up to present his radio show in May 1965 prompted KFFA to send someone to rouse him, but it was too late. Williamson had died in his sleep at his boarding house in Helena, Arkansas.

Martin Lamble - Car Crash

Travelling back to London from a Birmingham concert, the band’s van was involved in a crash near Mill Hill, while other members were shaken up, Thompson was badly injured, and Martin Lamble was killed instantly.

Johnny Ace - Suicide

To impress his girlfriend, Olivia, and blues singer Big Mama Thornton, his guests backstage as he took a break from the Houston crowd. Olivia on his lap, he put the gun to his head and, chancing upon the one bullet in the chamber, proceeded to blow his brains out.

The likelihood is that his end came at the Three Forks roadhouse in Greenwood, Mississippi, belonging to his lover’s jealous husband, it is also highly probable that Johnson, had been with the woman in question that very evening.

Don Drummond - Suicide

The causes of Drummond’s own death while institutionalized remain speculative, the majority accept the given verdict of suicide, though suggestions of intervention by members of Mahfood’s family, or even a beating by guards at the unit, were dramatically brought to the fore by Drummond’s contemporary Hugh Malcolm.
